When your engagement session inquiry includes buzzwords like: candid, vintage, moody, film, kind of blurry photos. I am ALL IN before you can even ask. Add sexy, romantic and intimate and I might just fall in love with you too.
It was during their stay that Jordan decided what their engagement session would be a year before Jared popped the question. She just knew that she wanted a moody engagement session there when the time came for photos. Fast-forward to a year later and I get the inquiry for an urgent engagement session at The Vanderbilt in Newport, Rhode Island. Cue the buzzwords: “Your shoots are exactly what I’m looking for with the candid, vintage, moody, film, kind of blurry photos and if you check out their Instagram the hotel is perfect for it.”
No matter the session, it mostly always starts out stiff. Unless you are a professional model or you’re simply comfortable in front of the camera, most of my couples are not. And that’s OK! I don’t expect anyone to jump in front of my camera and begin posing for me. Because of this I like to break the ice with a silly prompt that really gets you out of your comfort zone and everything after that feels normal and significantly more comfortable.
In the case of Jordan and Jared, Jordan was definitely more comfortable in front of the camera than Jared. When I snapped the photo labeled Squishmallow, in the gallery above, I squealed that Jordan had just SERVED. Following my excitement, Jared spilled the beans that Jordan had had some prior modeling experience. That’s when Jordan then proceeded to tell me she modeled for Squishmallow and the photos are on Amazon! I had no idea what that meant exactly until she sent me the link to the listings post session, something I am sure we will laugh about for years to come.
Despite Jordan’s modeling experience, I still needed to loosen them both up so I gave them a scenario to act out. I told Jordan to pretend that Jared had just proposed. That they walked into the hotel filled with all their family and friends who were there waiting with cocktails to celebrate. To pretend that Jordan celebrated with one too many cocktails and was thriving dancing and jumping on the bench as Jared laughed at her and attempted to get her down and carry her up to their hotel room. Can you pin point what photos might’ve been a result of this prompt?!
They understood the assignment moving forward and we had a blast coming up with little stories to tell in each room of the hotel. We spent 3 hours role playing and before we knew it it was time for me to leave and them to make their dinner reservation.
